My partner and I have a goal to go to all of the Minnesota State Parks. So far we are at 25/66! Out of all of the parks we have been to, the one that we find ourselves returning to the most is Tettegouche. This state park is in Silver Bay (a little over 200 miles north of Minneapolis), and has some of the best views Minnesota has to offer. Between Lake Superior cliff sides and wooded trails leading to cascading waterfalls, you really can’t go wrong no matter which trail you choose. If you don’t have a lot of time to experience this park, the Shovel Point Trail is the most bang for your buck. A fall Tettegouche engagement session is also an amazing idea because of the stunning fall colors at one of our personal favorite overlooks of Lake Superior.
The Shovel Point Trail is a 1.2 mile out-and-back trail labeled as “easy” on AllTrails. The trailhead for Shovel Point is right behind the Visitor’s Center, so pretty easy to find! The majority of the trail is covered in a sturdy wooden boardwalk and a LOT of stairs. The stairs go up the whole way in, and down the whole way out. There are also some little offshoots at the beginning of the trail that lead to some rocky beaches. The beaches are usually pretty quiet, which makes them great stops for photos.
There are a lot of stairs to reach the vista point, but I promise it’s worth it! Once you reach the top, you are welcomed by an expansive view of Lake Superior and Minnesota Shoreline. While this is a beautiful view in any season, it is particularly gorgeous in the fall! The point you see out in the distance is Palisade Head, which is actually part of Tettegouche State Park. However, this area is not directly accessible from Tettegouche, and is just a short drive down highway 61. Palisade Head is another one of my favorite engagement session locations, and you can read more about this spot on this blog post.
The trail ends at the vista point, so once you reach the top, it’s time to turn back around and walk back (mostly downhill the whole way now). I feel like I always see things on the way back down that I did not notice on the way up, so keep your eyes peeled for some pretty stops along the way. Keep scrolling to see what your fall Tettegouche engagement session could look like.
If you are wanting to do your engagement session in the Silver Bay area and need a place to stay, here are some of our recommendations! They aren’t sponsored, just some of our personal favorites. Of course, Tettegouche and some of the surrounding parks also offer beautiful campgrounds, but they fill up fast!
AmericInn Silver Bay: Your basic hotel accommodation, with a pool, hot tub, water slide, and complimentary breakfast. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and some have gorgeous lake views. This is the closest option to Tettegouche, at only 4 miles away.
Red Raven North: A sweet and simple little motel that opened the summer of 2021. Red Raven is known for their bike, gear, and coffee shop in Crosby, MN, but recently expanded to the north shore. They are planning on opening another bike shop and restaurant here as well! If you’re lucky, Baptism River BBQ might even be parked outside (a north shore hidden gem)! Red Raven North is just a little south in Beaver Bay.
Wild Pines Cabin: If you want to turn your engagement session into a romantic getaway, this is the place to stay! A cozy fireplace, lake views, and private trails make for the perfect place to recharge with your partner.
