Santa Clara Ruins

One of the most beautiful and unique locations to elope in Antigua is Santa Clara Ruins. Originally built in the 1700s, this former convent is now a beautiful, partially restored ruin that exudes old-world charm and history. Imagine saying your vows under grand stone archways, surrounded by ivy-covered walls and the golden glow of the Guatemalan sun. Whether you’re planning a simple elopement or a small ceremony with close loved ones, this location provides an effortlessly romantic atmosphere. Since it’s a historical site, you’ll need a permit to have a ceremony there. This can typically be arranged through a wedding planner or directly with local authorities.

Legal Requirements for Eloping in Guatemala

There are some specific legal requirements you will need to consider before eloping in Guatemala.

  • Marriage License – If you want your marriage to be legally recognized in Guatemala, you’ll need to provide passports, birth certificates, and a sworn statement of your single status. You may also need divorce or death certificates if applicable.
  • Legal Officiant – A local lawyer or notary public must officiate the ceremony for it to be legally binding. Some couples opt for a symbolic ceremony instead and take care of the legal paperwork in their home country.
  • Translation – If any documents are not in Spanish, they will need to be officially translated and notarized.
