If you are looking for a minimal wedding venue in Minneapolis, The Whim may be your perfect location. Tucked away in the neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis. this venue is filled with light and crisp, white walls. If you’re looking for a place to hide away from your guests for a little while with a cocktail in hand, the cozy basement speakeasy or front patio lit with string lights are there for you. I’m so excited to share these photos of Sunny & Chad’s Khmer Wedding at The Whim in Minneapolis.
Sunny had THREE outfit changes throughout the night to celebrate Khmer wedding traditions. Would you believe that Sunny and her friends created all of the florals for this wedding?! I think they have their own floral design company in their future, because the bouquets and aisle arrangements were flawless! Sunny knew exactly what she wanted on her wedding day, and it was executed so beautifully. Shout out to all of the vendors that helped make it happen!
Venue: The Whim
Hair/makeup: Fox Run Beauty
Caterer: Crave Catering
Desserts: A Forgetful Baker (one of the best cakes I’ve ever had!)
Dress: Che Bella
The Whim has such a beautiful getting ready space! Tall ceilings, bright white walls, and lots of mirrors keep the attention centered on you in every photo. This space is right next to the ceremony and reception space, so it is easy accessible for you and your wedding party throughout the night.
The Whim has two separate getting-ready areas. The first has bright white walls, mirrors and makeup chairs along a long counter, and a huge ornate gold mirror (which happens to look amazing in photos). The second is tucked away in the basement speakeasy with a dark, moody vibe. As a photographer, this is one of my favorite wedding venues, because it feels impossible to take a bad photo here.
Another feature The Whim has to offer is a small room at the front of the building with shelving for all of your styling ideas, and glass french doors that can be closed for just a little bit of privacy. This space is perfect for a first look, or a moment to sneak away from your cocktail hour with your partner! Sunny & Chad chose to decorate the shelves minimally, and it turned out beautifully.
At some wedding venues, we find ourselves searching for space that is large enough and pretty enough as a backdrop for wedding party and family photos. That is definitely not an issue here! Sunny & Chad’s wedding party were so amazing during wedding party photos. Everyone made sure the bride and groom were having a good time!
Ceremony time! Ceremonies at The Whim are beautifully open and bright, which is great for your guests, but also great for photographers! Having the ability to move around during the ceremony means you will get photos from many different angles. The faces of your guests can be captured as well. Because you invited them for a reason, and we want to make sure you remember every detail of this moment. This is it!
Wedding guests were sent off to start cocktail hour while Sunny changed into her Khmer wedding attire. The Whim is such a large, open space that it is easy to transition between the ceremony and cocktail hour. The guests were asked to shift to the front of the building for cocktail hour to transition from the ceremony space to reception. We such away with just Sunny & Chad to capture Sunny in her beautiful Khmer attire before saying hello to all of the guests!
When it was time to enter the reception space (can we talk about how beautiful it is?!), Sunny changed back into her western wedding dress. We ate a delicious meal from Crave Catering before a handful of speeches that had the whole room laughing!
Both Sunny & Chad participated in outfit change #3. This was done before the couple went to each table for their table blessings (receiving cards from their friends and family before taking little shots of rice wine). This was such a fun part of the night! After table blessings, it was time for just one more outfit change back into Sunny’s wedding dress before dancing the night away. I am so grateful to have been a part of such a gorgeous Khmer wedding at The Whim!
